Tokyo-based illustrator-turned-VJ Shantell Martin will release her first DVD, titled KOOB’S, on November 20, 2008 through the lightrhythmvisuals label. Featuring a diverse collection of inventive and playful videos, each backed by an audio track produced by a range of musicians and accompanied by its own special guest VJ remix, the DVD marks a natural progression for the artist, who trained as an illustrator but has since collaborated with fashion designers, magazine publishers, live bands and ceramic artists. “With this DVD I wanted to make work using a diverse mix of media and then share it easily. I also wanted to produce different tracks in a way that anybody could, hoping to inspire people to do it for themselves,” she says. Multi-angle programming allows viewers to interact for a “home VJ experience” by switching between the original tracks and their remixes. Last night LA's cutting edge monthly soul party came to New York for a one night only special! The event was produced by Nu-Soul Magazine, Soul Union and The Bloom Effect and took place at the elegant and kool Sutra lounge in the east village.

I was invited down by The Bloom Effect to do some 'hidden ora' drawing NYC style! Check out some of the photos up now on my flicker!

Wednesday 11th of June, Shantell Martin invited a handful of friends down to Super Deluxe for the second time for another quite hidden ora night.
In turn each person stood in front of the projector screen for 4 minutes while Shantell drew there hidden ora.

Since graduating from London’s Central Saint Martins University of Art & Design with first class honors in graphic design and illustration in 2003, Shantell Martin has been expanding conventional definitions of drawing, using it as a base from which to storm and occupy the design, fashion and music scenes. Now based in Tokyo, Martin has been a much sought-after resident and guest VJ at some of the city’s most experimental club nights and has collaborated with some of the best-known names in the fashion and music industry.

Like her drawings, Martin herself seems to be in an unstoppable state of constant and conscious movement: by turn illustrator, designer, VJ, artist, videographer and more, each persona is linked by the common thread of her trademark continuous-line style, each project a further entanglement of disciplines and an exploratory step into a new world the artist creates as she moves through it.

(e)BOMBERS describe their instruments as bent in every instance, and if you aren't familiar with the concept, it generally consists of an impulsive operation (or several) on an old electronic noisemaker, producing the aural equivalent of a dying Speak-and-Spell. OK, a simplification, but perhaps you will get a better idea from the member line up:

The name? In their own words: "(e)"pronounces "kakko-e" that means "cool","smart" or "it is groovy" in Japan. Therefore we aimed to do "(e)" performance at this time.

For this unique performance, we have enlisted the help of a very unique artist, Shantell Martin (often going by the name shanteru), to provide live illustrations with the group. Shantell will create a spontaneous artwork during the course of the set, which may grow across the walls and into your hair and/or lamb's wool coat if you don't pay attention. Recently joining a number of international events as a visual artist, this is a perfect chance to see why Shantell's work is gaining ground both here in Japan and abroad. This will be a truly singular collaboration, and should not be missed.

Tetragrammaton is a new psychedelic free form unit featuring TOMO (saxophones, hurdy-gurdy, effects), Cal Lyall (guitar, effects) and Ken Nobunaga (drums). From early this year they have played regularly at venues in Tokyo, uncovering a plethora of sounds that shifts between layered soundscapes to free jazz to ambient swathes of droning loops. Guaranteed doses of ecstatic saxophone, stumbling drums, and an array of non-guitar sounds from the guitar will be matched by the inspired cello playing of Yasumune Morishige (a.k.a. Mori-shige), who appears as a special guest with the trio. Mori-shige has appeared at Test Tone in the past, joining Damo Suzuki in a line-up with heavy-hitters Mitsuru Nasuno and Jimanica, holding his own with intensity and improvisational genius, and we're glad to have him back.

The performance will be augmented by the signature dancing of Kinya 'Zulu' Tsuruyama, who has gained a name for himself worldwide, firmly within the 'butoh' tradition of Japanese improvisational dance. For those who know the scene, he needs no introduction, but for others, the best place to start would be 'Dairakudakan', the world-famous butoh troupe started by avant-garde pioneer Akaji Maro back in the '70s. After performing worldwide with this legendary group, Zulu went on to form his own troupe, Yan-Shu, while lending his talents to theater and the screen (most notably appearing in Peter Greenaway's 'The Pillow Book') and teaching workshops in Canada, Germany, Mexico and the U.S.A.

Finally, joining the circus from behind the projection booth, Shantell Martin will provide stunning visuals with her inimitable drawings, covering the walls with an interconnected veil of hallucinatory lines and images. This is the third time we have invited her back, and we consider her a important member of Test Tone who represents very much what we are trying to achieve at the event. If you have not seen her amazing work yet, this is your chance. Mark your calendar!

The girl with the purple pigtails is back! We work hard to make sure the monthly line-up is ever-changing, but Coppe' makes it easy for us. She has (so far) assembled an entirely different band each time, always lending a fresh new take to her repertoire of space-jazz, cosmic pop and lounge music you can move your feet to.

This month, she comes complete with full jazz backing, featuring Fred Viennot (laptop, keys), Jeff Curry (bass) and Zak Bond (drums). Loads of interstellar fun.

Tokyo’s underground electro/techno party returns to La Fabrique to finish off 2007 with a very big bang. Kiboo & Koboo, the Tokyo DJ unit known as Gaines join us to serve up their trademark fresh and funky sounds. Wotlie ft Hisashi T will be dropping their block rocking beats into the mix to push you that little bit further before London Calling massive welcome UK-based Electronica act Product.01 to perform live in Japan for the very first time. Product.01 have been making waves in the club community and their live act is not to be missed.

DJ Munoz will be bringing up the rear to tear the roof off, dropping selections from one of the sickest record collections in Japan. The REDBOX PROJECT announces the fourth installation in a series of
mixed-media events to be held Saturday, December 1st at the Super
Deluxe club in Nishi Azabu from 9pm to 5am. REDBOX 4 brings together
the hottest international and domestic underground artists and
creators collaborating in a live event featuring music, visuals,
photography, live painting and live video mixing. It is part
exhibition and part dance party where members of Tokyo’s fashion and
music elite gather under one roof to celebrate.

Started in San Francisco in 2002 by DJ/photographer Carlos Gibbs, the
REDBOX Project began as a photo series of people and places all
featuring a ‘red box’. Additional photographers joined the project,
and helped the REDBOX to make its way through 20 countries, appearing
in the hands of the Masai tribesman of Kenya, the Buddhist monks of
Thailand and the street kids of Calcutta. Now residing in Tokyo, the
‘red box’ has become the centerpiece of an event that is never the
same twice.
